Our hotel is in the centre of one of England’s most picturesque and unspoilt small towns. Situated in the beautiful Nene river valley, Oundle sits in a meander of the river as it flows towards the east coast of England. It is a limestone built town dominated by exceptional mediaeval, Elizabethan and Georgian architecture - including the beautiful 13th Century church of St Peter and the buildings of Oundle public school.
Although the hotel’s origins date from the original timber hostelry of 638 AD, the Talbot was rebuilt from the stone ruins of nearby Fotheringhay Castle in 1626. The ghost of Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned and executed at the castle, is said to haunt parts of the hotel – particularly the magnificent oak staircase down which she reputedly walked to her execution.
For the traditionalists the hotel boasts oak beams, open fires and transomed windows. For the modernists it also has complimentary WiFi throughout. The intimate restaurant and cosy bar offer contemporary English a la carte or traditional pub classic cuisine, fine wines and real ales.
